Today I was fortunate enough to experience the Swiss tradition of Desaples! This is the tradition where every autumn, the cows are brought back down from the mountains where they have been grazing for the summer.
The cows are adorned with flowers and embroidered bells. They march through the center of town where everyone gathers in a big festival.
This festival took place in Charmey, a town very close to the cheese making Gruyere. While the cows parade, local cheese makers give demonstrations on traditional cheese making and allow passersby to sample their products!
My favorite part of the festival was listening to the alphorns!
Overall, it was an amazing day in one of the most beautiful places in the world.
